Jaljale Region

The Jaljale is a ridge running basically north and south between the districts of Sankhuwasabha (home of the Makalu region) and Taplejun (the Kangchenjunga region). It is a beautiful ridge which run basically from the roadhead of Hile/Basantepur near the Terai to the Tibetan border, reaching maximum altitudes of about 14,500 feet. It is a unique area due to its diverse forests (on the lower sides of the ridge), mineral deposits, flora & fauna, and superb views. From a distance, four of the five highest mountains in the world can be seen (Everst, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu).

There are several ways to mount the ridge: from the roadhead of Hile/Basantepur (about 3-4 days), from Taplejun bazaar (about 3-4 days), and from Tumlingtar via Chainpur (3 days). Any of these routes could be used as an exit route as well. Currently, this area is only practically accessible to people who hire a trekking company to guide them because of the complete lack of tourist infrastructure (which is an attraction for most who come this way). Some of the trekkers extend their trek only up to the Milke Danda or Guro Jure, while those prepared for multiple days of remote camping can go up to the Jaljale peaks and return. Still, others sometime continue north past the Jaljale into the Panch Pokhari (five lakes) area, a religious pilgrimage site for Hindu’s around August each year. And the very well-prepared few have used this route as an entry to the Makalu Barun region via restricted areas. All in all, the amount of traffic through these areas is very small (less than a hundred). From the roadhead, there is not even one tourist lodge, but the knowledgeable traveler can travel up to the Milke danda with relative ease (assuming he/she knows the way), eating and sleeping in villagers houses.
